Set in the rocky landscape near Joshua Tree National Park, this hospitality-oriented residence is conceived as a contemporary retreat that mediates between the vast scale of the desert and the intimacy of inhabitable space. Rather than appearing as a single object, the project breaks its massing into a series of angular, faceted volumes that echo the surrounding rock formations, allowing the architecture to read as an extension of the terrain rather than an imposition upon it.
The building’s envelope is defined by a high-performance reflective and transparent skin that visually dissolves the architecture into its environment while ensuring environmental control and interior comfort. This shifting surface captures the colors and textures of the desert, transforming the horizon, the sky, and the rocks into active elements of the composition. The crystalline geometry and calibrated transparency generate a constantly changing perception of the building, depending on light, time of day, and viewpoint.
Inside, the project unfolds as a sequence of immersive spaces oriented toward carefully framed views of the landscape. Light, shadow, and material restraint define the interiors, reinforcing the idea of retreat and contemplation. As a hospitality project, the residence is conceived not merely as accommodation, but as an architectural experience that heightens awareness of the desert’s scale, silence, and elemental presence.
